Inside our Anniversary Issue

Manar Alhinai | United Arab Emirates | 30.09.2018

Dear readers,

We still remember the night we were driving down Abu Dhabi’s streets, looking for sports gear, when we both expressed our frustration over the shortage of Khaleeji voices on the international level, and how the international media continuously focuses on reporting on the political and economic affairs of our region, while rarely shedding any light on other aspects, such as our emerging arts scene, rich culture and history, and the exceptional game changers of our communities.

We believed and still believe that if we don’t step up and tell our stories, someone else always will and it will never be the same. As knowledge advocates, we thought that the best way to address the problem was to remedy it ourselves. It wasn’t an easy route. It took us nearly ten months and hundreds of hours to bring Sekka, the first online publication of its kind to be managed and run by the people of the region, to life!

The night we hit that LIVE button on our website in October 2017 left us feeling anxious and excited because we realised that life, as we both knew it, would never be the same again.

Throughout the past year, we’ve had the pleasure of working with numerous contributors, who have uncovered jaw dropping and overlooked stories from the region and beyond. We’ve shared them with you, and thousands of our other loyal readers, for free- a fact that we continue to be proud of.

The feedback that we receive from you is our favourite part of working on Sekka. We appreciate it when you take the time to write to us and tell us what our mission means to you, and how you too want to get onboard and join us in increasing the digital media content produced by the people of the Arabian Gulf Region.

With you, we were able to share over 150 original stories with the world and we cannot wait to produce more! We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this milestone than to open up our platform to the creative writers, poets and artists of the region this month, in order to honour and showcase their work on a bigger scale. One of these creatives is the talented Mahra Saeed Al Remeithi , the Emirati artist behind this month’s cover of Sekka’s Fiction Issue.

Thank you for supporting us, for all the Sekka stories that you’ve read and shared, and the impact that we’ve been able to make on our collective Khaleeji history and society, together.

What do we have planned for our second year around? Lots! But as always, we don’t reveal everything at once. So, you’ll have to stay tuned!

Happy Anniversary!

Much love,

Manar and Sharifah Alhinai
